Inspired by…Sculpt Barre

IMG_5744

Today I feel very fortunate to talk about Sculpt Barre and the lovely lady behind this amazing fitness studio that just saw its doors open this summer. I met Nikki Smith after I had been shaking and sweating in a class and immediately connected with her energy and excitement. We also shared a common past time in blogging, she being the founder of the blog A Thought in the Mind Of. So when she asked me if Inspired by Lynne wanted to be a part of Sculpt Barre’s journey, I immediately said yes.

And I said yes for a few reasons. First off, being a dance devotee, I have loved the barre for years and continue to love it in this new setting. Even with only a handful of classes under my belt, I can see and feel the difference it is making in my body. Secondly, this studio is a beautiful space and has a great atmosphere, which makes a huge difference when it comes to fitness. I wanted to capture this space and showcase its well thought out interior. And finally, because any woman who is passionate enough to follow her dream is inspiring and that is exactly what this blog is all about.

So, let’s get to know this enthusiastic entrepreneur…

~Who is Nikki?

Nikki is a realist. A big city girl at heart that lives out in the country. A positive thinker. A dog lover. A writer. A karma enthusiast.

~What was it about the barre that made you fall in love and eventually want to open up your own studio?

I couldn’t believe the results. That was it initially. I had done every type of workout and nothing sculpted my body the way barre did. If you commit to it there is no denying it. Then came the poise and grace. Ask anyone close to me – they would previously describe me as awkward and gangly. I move differently now. I got to experience tons of different barre methods living in the USA. I moved back to Canada and knew the people here had to experience this. It would be unfair for them not to! I took Business in University. So my dream of one day owning my own business took flight instantly.

~What has been one challenge you have faced while opening your own business?

I don’t want to make it sound like opening has only been puppies + sunshine – it has definitely been a lot more work than I expected! But so far it’s been fantastic. If I had to pick one thing to be the biggest challenge it would be remaining true to my vision. Starting a business is terrifying and you definitely second guess yourself. But I have been following my gut on every aspect of the business. That’s been my compass the entire way, even though the “more experienced” entrepreneurs and fitness instructors had tried to lead me in a different direction. Sculpt Barre wouldn’t be what Sculpt Barre is had I not followed that gut feeling.IMG_5766

~Where did you get the inspiration for the design of the studio?

I’ve always had a passion for design. This was the easiest part of the build-out. I designed it after some of my favourite studios/lofts in NYC. Fresh, modern, open-concept, a small space with glam details.IMG_5717

~What is your favourite purchase in the studio?

Uggh… do I have to pick just one? I’m sorry, I can’t! 3-way tie. The studio floors, the David Trubridge light fixture up front, and the frame wallpaper in the bathroom. I’m obsessed.IMG_5728IMG_5749IMG_5711

~What inspires you?

I’m going to sound really corny here, but bear with me. Honestly, kindness inspires me and it always has. However you look at it, to me it’s as simple as – You get what you give. When I see kindness or hear stories of kindness it fills my heart every time. How can that not inspire you?!IMG_5742

From taking class from Nikki to watching her interact with others, it’s clear that she was meant to bring the barre back to our city and will be undoubtedly successful doing so.

Though the class combines ballet technique with elements of Pilates at the barre, by no means do you need to be a dancer. It’s more about isolating the muscles with small controlled movements and building strength, then stretching to elongate those muscles. I also love the beginning of the class where a combination of arm movements with weights tones my arms like you wouldn’t believe. After each workout, I feel like every muscle in my body has been pushed.IMG_5709The care and attention that Nikki has put into the space has paid off. The studio space is spacious, modern and airy, the perfect place to get your sweat on.

The change room is bright and open. Details like the vintage inspired mirror and chevron bench add that touch of glam that Nikki wanted.IMG_5707

It’s easy to see why Nikki gravitated toward the frame wallpaper from Graham & Brown for the main bathroom because this fabulous print allowed her to add her own personal touch. And this is just one example of the inspirational words you can find around the studio. I mean who doesn’t want to read the words “You’re Pretty” when you look in a mirror! IMG_5729 IMG_5722

A fun, bright green cabinet holds the necessities and some fresh flowers.

Having been inspired by designers such as Peter Wilds in Vancouver, Nikki makes a big statement in the front entry with her dynamic David Trubridge light fixture and bold deer head wall mount.  IMG_5739

Floating white shelves keep the space open while allowing Nikki to display merchandise.

A chic statement is made in the seating area with the elegant floor lamp and plush velvet chair. She opted for a modern coffee table with a unique shape that allows for handy magazine storage. The sleek white contrasts nicely with the grey floors and furniture.

The whole studio feels light, fresh and sophisticated, just what you would expect from a stylish person like Nikki.

And I’m not the only one who has noticed. Sculpt Barre is coming up in more conversations and is growing more popular by the day. And I know that Nikki has some big plans for the future, so stay tuned! I encourage you to visit the Website or follow along on Facebook.

It was a pleasure touring your space Nikki and I look forward to many more hours of sculpting at the barre!
