Wayfair Comes to Canada

Just the other day, I was doing some errands, cursing the heavens that I no longer had a Target to run into! Are there other fellow Canadians who feel the same way as me? I mean, sure, it wasn’t quite the same as its American counterpart and a lot of times the shelves were barely stocked with items I probably would have bought…but it was great for so many cute home related items or “I know I’ll find that at Target” sort of items. Anyways, rant over…beeeecause we’ve had a new addition to our Canadian online retailer pool…Wayfair. I admit I’ve never shopped this site before and I’ve been very hesitant to order ANYTHING outside of Canada with the low dollar right now. But this new launch could be very intriguing. Here’s what I like about a Wayfair Canada edition:

  1. Free shipping – even on the big stuff
  2. Great selection and a large range in terms of pricing
  3. NO DUTY and CANADIAN $$$
  4. A nifty home improvement section that could be useful for us during flips
  5. What looks like a lot of sales!
  6. Basically a Home Sense online!

I did a bit of digging on the site and found some great options for multiple rooms in the house. I just may consider ordering something and then letting you know how the shipping process goes! As for now, check out my top picks from the new Wayfair.cawayfair canada

Not a bad selection amiright?! What do you think about this new home shopping option? Will you order off Wayfair Canada??

Here are some more of my current favourites:

PS – Update!! I have ordered many items and so far have had no issues. Shipping is always really fast, I’ve never paid for duties and I’ve found every item I ordered was in good condition. I do really pay attention to other people’s comments though on certain items. Any bad reviews on condition or feeling “cheap” and I avoid. All in all, amazing experiences so far!

  • I was just ooh-ing and ahh-ing on wayfair the other day, so happy to have them as an option now! This could be dangerous….haha

  • Has anyone ordered from wayfair? I want to order a piece of furniture and although i know they pay for shipping, was wandering about duty and brokerage charges.

  • Saw your story about Wayfair starting the Canadian operation.

For several months I have been doing a lot of price comparison between Wayfair.com and Wayfair.ca and we Canadians are really being price gouged by the Canadian division. One example just to show what I am talking about this item:

https://www.wayfair.com/House-of-Hampton-Tenenbaum-Serving-Cart-HOHN7981-HOHN7981.html is 151.99 USD. Now here is the same item at Canadian pricing from Wayfair.ca

https://www.wayfair.ca/Braelyn-Serving-Cart-HOHN7981.html is $318.99 CAD. With currency exchange it should be about $201.20.

When contacted they have provided no explanation for this 35% markup over their normal profit margin. This is nothing more than pure greed by the online retailer. This same thing goes on on almost every same item that is available on both sites.

    • So strange because someone by the name of Joan Crozier just sent me, word for word, the exact same message.
If you are a legit person then yes, I agree this is a crazy markup. What’s even more unfortunate is that I’ve encountered crazy mark ups at West Elm, Crate & Barell, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, even Target. It’s the same thing everywhere and thus why I wrote a separate post about design shopping in general in Canada and the many frustrations.

      • Hi Lynne,

That was my husband getting the word out as well. Amazon.ca is the same with ridiculous price gouging as compared to their American parent company. We now shop U.S. sites that ship to Canada like Overstock.ca and Macys and find that with exchange, shipping and import costs we are still way ahead compared to what the Canadian online retailers are charging.
Case in point, we were looking for a double deep fryer and saw it on Amazon.com for $63.45 US (converted about $84.00 CAD) but shipping was a outrageous $80.00 US and then went to Amazon.ca where it was $251.00 to $480.00. The seller at $251.00 was only $160.00 a few days earlier as I had the item in my cart.

Finally bought it on Overstock.com where it ended up costing $150.00 CAD delivered. It is pretty bad when you have to go to the US to avoid getting ripped off by our Canadian sellers.

        Regards,

        Joan

  • I was going to make a purchase with them but the markup is high.
US site $24.99 Canadian site $87.49 (looks like duty is in the price & shipping) though $24.99 would more then likely not charge duty or taxes from experience.
Will not be purchasing anything with them

  • I’ve been comparing pricing and my suspicion is that wayfair.ca is adding the shipping cost to the product price and the duty costs. Comparing the .ca to the .com prices on specific items is a huge difference even after doing an exchange rate at 1.38. Based on the cost of shipping the particular item for a .com product, it comes very close to what the .ca price is. It almost appears they hide the shipping in the Canadian price but claim free shipping on items over $75. When I price the same item on cymax.ca and that of wayfair.ca, cymax shows an addon price for duty and also shipping. This always comes close to the price wayfair.ca charges (with their so-called free shipping). I’d say 90% of their products (the bigger items) ships from the US. Crossing out the original price is a marketing ploy and claims it’s the MFSP.

One example: Warm Shaker Coffee table today is listed $559 CAD, but on the us Wayfair, it’s $265 US (xchg rate at 1.38 = $365 CAD. A difference of $195 CAD. Shipping normally for this would be around that difference. The Warm Shaker TV Stand on Wayfair Canada is $1250 CAD and on the US site it’s $535 US. A difference of $715 CAD. Tons more examples.
